Despite the best laid plans, unforeseen events may require you to break your term deposit prior to maturity.

The penalties vary between financial institutions, however as a minimum any interest that has not yet already been paid to you (via a regular installments calculated on your term deposit rate) will be withheld.  Interest rate installments typically do not apply to terms less than 12 months.

Additionally, some institutions will deduct a penalty fee from the original principal. This fee could be a set dollar value or a percentage of your investment.

A request for a partial withdrawal is not usually an option banks will entertain.
